Flusco Wood is on the edge of the Lake District National Park, in the North Lakes and is an ideal base for hill walking, mountain biking, watersports, and exploring the local area.
We are a short drive to Ullswater and the Helvellyn range, Derwentwater, and the Northern Fells around picturesque Caldbeck.
Flusco Wood offers tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the busier local towns. However, due to our location we are only a short drive away from the popular towns of Keswick and Penrith.
Flusco Wood is close to the Helvellyn and High Street ranges, as well as Blencathra and the Skiddaw Fells - all just a short drive away.
For families, or those who prefer gentler routes, there are lovely walks around the shore of Ullswater, around Caldbeck and along the River Eden, and lower, easier peaks such as Great Mell Fell and Little Mell Fell.
For cyclists, the 140 mile C2C (Coast to Coast) route and the Reivers Route are not far away. The Reivers Route is 173 miles long. It is also known as the ‘Return C2C’ as it takes you from the end of the west-to-east route all the way back to the start of the C2C.
Mountain bikers are well catered for with a variety of options from scenic bridleways to challenging and technical routes over the top of nearby fells like Hevellyn and Blencathra.
Kirkstone Pass beyond Ullswater is the highest major road (A592) in the Lake District and the climb is 454 metres. The three different routes to the top are challenging but exhilarating for cyclists who are rewarded with outstanding views of some of the finest fells in the Lake District.
Flusco Wood is close to some of the most famous landmarks in the Lake District, so for those who enjoy sightseeing, or who simply fancy a day off from their exertions, we are near:
Ullswater - One of the most beautiful lakes in the Lake District. It is two miles long and Ullswater Steamers run daily. There is plenty of boating activity available.
At Glenridding Sailing Centre on the Lake there are excellent watersports facilities for sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and powered boats.
Aira Force, one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls in the Lake District, is only a few minutes’ drive away and close to the shore of Ullswater.
Keswick and Derwentwater - We are approximately 14 miles from this popular part of the North Lakes.
Hutton in the Forest - Located 6 miles NW of Penrith, Hutton-in-the-Forest is a Grade 1 listed country house which has belonged to same family since 1605.
Dalemain is a country house 5 miles SE of Flusco. Opened to the public in 1977 but is still lived in by the Hasell-McCosh family. There are interesting collections of fine furniture, portraits, ceramics, dolls' houses, and old toys.
Greystoke Castle is 5 miles west of Penrith and was traditionally a sporting estate and deer park. The castle dates back almost a thousand years although, having been largely destroyed by Oliver Cromwell and latterly badly damaged by fire, much of the interior is early Victorian.
These houses are all open to the public and have beautiful gardens to explore.
Anglers are well catered for in the area and there are stocked lakes nearby where fishing is available subject to daily permits.
